Lucy explains how to make the most of the next few weeks
- Are you an asparagus grower? Record the first date you cut those supremely delicious spears, then make a note in your diary to stop ten weeks from then, so plants can recover.
- Hardy perennial herbs like oregano and mint can now have old top growth cut back to soil level, using secateurs. This will have done its job of sheltering wildlife through winter.
- Protect any open fruit blossom outside during frosty weather by draping thick fleece (or old blankets) over the plants. Remember to remove it once risk has passed so insects can pollinate the flowers.
- Do you feel like you need a health boost? You can sow seeds of natural sweeteners, like sweet cicely and stevia – now to decrease the use of shop-bought sugar in your diet.
- Gardeners in mild or sheltered spots with light soil can sow parsnips into prepared beds, now. If you’re on heavy clay or live in an exposed area, wait until late April or sow during May.
