Smaller dahlias are true patio stars, says aficionado Kim O’Brien
With their vibrant blooms and diverse forms, dahlias are the stars of the summer borders, and they can be just as spectacular in containers. Whether you have a compact courtyard, a balcony or a small city garden, growing dahlias in pots allows you to enjoy their bold beauty without the need for large beds and borders.
With the right varieties and care, even the smallest space can be transformed into a dazzling dahlia showcase.
Opting for shorter, bushier dahlias, with compact growth that doesn’t require excessive staking, works best in pots and containers. Choose from pompoms, singles, collarette, gallery and patio varieties. Here are some top performers:

‘Gallery Art Deco’
From the Gallery Series bred specifically for containers, this variety produces vivid orange-pink blooms on compact, robust plants.

Figaro Series
These single-flowered dahlias have open petals with a yellow centre, attracting pollinators and adding instant colour.

‘Bishop of Oxford’
A popular single variety with dramatic rich burgundy foliage and contrasting orange flowers. This dahlia requires regular deadheading.

‘Caitlin’s Joy’:
A compact miniature ball with neat, tightly rolled petals and a tidy habit perfect for patio pots.

‘Zingaro’
A small decorative form with pink flowers that have a vibrant yellow flush. This prolific bloomer combines compact size with an impressive flowering season.

How to grow dahlias in pots
– Choosing the right pot is essential. Larger pots help prevent drying out and provide room for tuber development. Select a container of at least 30cm (12in) in diameter and depth and fill the bottom third with gravel for additional drainage.
– Always use a good quality peat-free multi-purpose compost as this offers the stability and nutrients dahlias need. Add slow-release fertiliser at planting – and a generous handful of fish, blood and bone gives the nutritional boost they need.
– When it comes to support, even compact dahlias can benefit from early staking. Insert a small stake at planting time to avoid disturbing roots later.
– Container-grown dahlias dry out faster than those in the ground. Water thoroughly once a week. This should be sufficient even during periods of extreme hot weather. Feed with a liquid tomato fertiliser once buds form to encourage flowering.
– Regular deadheading keeps plants looking tidy and promotes continuous flowering throughout summer and autumn.
-With careful selection and a bit of attention, dahlias can work hard all season in container gardens, bringing colour, drama, and interest to even the smallest outdoor spaces.
